Joseph Middleton, affectionately known as "Big Junior" and "Crazy Joe" to family and friends was born May 19, 1932 in Philadelphia to the late Roberta Braxton (Burnside) and Joe Bivians. Joe was married to Mary Middleton who preceded him in death. He was a loving and devoted father to Joseph Thomas and Rydell Middleton and also to Derrick and Eugene Sharpe, his two step sons who also preceded him in death. Joe was the eldest of 14 siblings, in which 8 preceded him in death. Joseph was educated in the Philadelphia School Systems and was a proud graduate of Edward W. Bok high school. On February 20, 1952 Joe enlisted into the United States Army. During his tenure in the Army Joe fought in the Korean War and was a football star known as "Speedy" he wore the # 64 holding the position of a tight end. Joe was honorably released from active Duty, February 25, 1955. Upon being discharged Joe held various jobs, such as a sanitation worker and one of his most rewarding Jobs was his job at Veterans Stadium as a security guard where he could watch his favorite football team the Philadelphia Eagles play. Joe lived his life to the fullest, he always showed up for his grandchildren and loved his great grandchildren dearly even if he couldn't remember their names. He had an infectious laugh, great sense of humor and he loved making people around him laugh. Joe was quite the charmer and was very charismatic. He enjoyed playing pinochle and dancing with family and friends. You would never leave his presence without letting out a little chuckle or a big belly laugh. People called him a professional mourner as he attended all funerals in South Philly. Joe was a proud vet and you would never catch him without wearing his Korean War hat. Joe gave his life to the Lord, Feb 23, 2012 at the age of 79. Joe leaves to cherish his memories: His Sons: Joseph Thomas and Rydell Middleton, Siblings: Ernestine Burnside, Eulissa Hampton, Daniel Burnside, Hubert Burnside, and James Burnside. Grandchildren: Hershal (Lamont), Tamica, Katrina, Kevin, Tyneisha, Keya, Rydell II and Yusuf, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, others relatives along with his South Philly Community.
